Dr. Wangyal

“Several days after 9/11 and the collapse of the World Trade Centre, Dharamsala, where I was living in India, was braced for a major earthquake that would send its tiered buildings down the mountainous slopes like dominos. I was in the middle of a three-month solitary purification retreat at Tushita Centre, in the hills above the town, doing rigorous exercise and visualisation. Dr. Wangyal checked out my physical condition every two weeks. This week, as I heard the warplanes sweeping overhead, I was quite stressed when I went to see him.

One of the Dalai Lama’s personal physicians, Dr. Lobsang Wangyal, a Doctor of Tibetan Medicine in Dharamsala, India was supervising my health biweekly during this retreat. This is the home of many Tibetans in exile and Dr. Wangyal’s famed Men Tsee Kang, Institute for Tibetan Medicine where this ancient natural medicine system is preserved. He gently took my hand and as he felt for my pulse, he said with great sadness, “If you need to worry, worry about this. There will come a time when the complexity of Western mind and lifestyle will eventually manifest physically as diseases that are too complex to treat with medicine alone. Both western and eastern medicine and doctors alone will not be able to prevent or cure these diseases.

Once they spread, they will become universal. Go and dedicate your prayers and positive thoughts to help remedy that.”

He was skillful. He knew this prediction and advice would not depress me but motivate me.

A year later, Dr. Wangyal passed away after the age of 80 leaving his legacy behind him.

I knew then that the rest of my life would be dedicated to education and training of facilitators globally who could tranform the internal psychological causes in the minds of people that contribute to complex disease. Also to heal past hurts and hidden emotional suffering that makes them susceptible to these diseases when they spread. Finally to re-educate people to remove the underlying mental confusion that makes the mind fertile for these internal causes.
